Abstract:

In this work, we present five years of development and improvements on COPACOBANA, a reconfigurable cluster system dedicated specifically to the task of cryptanalysis. Latest changes on the architecture involve modifications for larger and more powerful FPGA devices with dedicated 32 MB of external RAM and point-to-point communication links for improved data throughput. We present a series of cryptanalytic applications that are currently available and benefit from the latest improvements on the architecture.

Bio:

Tim Gueneysu is an assistant professor leading the research group "Hardware Security" at Ruhr University of Bochum in Germany. Major research topics of his group are cryptographic and cryptanalytic implementations and systems, in particular involving reconfigurable devices. With respect to cryptographic implementations, he established and still holds performance records for the symmetric AES-128 block cipher on Xilinx Virtex-5 FPGAs and asymmetric Elliptic Curve Cryptography standards on Xilinx Virtex-4 FPGAs. He co-developed the COPACOBANA FPGA cluster system in cooperation with the University of Kiel that was originally designed to tackle the vast amount of complex computations for a large variety of cryptanalytic applications. Due the great success of this unique cluster system, it is now sold world-wide by the spin-off company Sciengines GmbH.

Prof. Gueneysu contributed and published more than 35 journal and conference publications in the area of IT security and cryptography (e.g., IEEE Transactions on Computers, Journal of Cryptographic Engineering, IACR CHES).
